Team Rose Motorsports' Porsche 914 has an turbocharged rotary engine from a third generation Mazda RX-7 (Series 5 13B), making for an extremely engaging car to drive. The exhaust's first iteration was a constant annoyance to anyone nearby and was simply a 3' section of straight pipe. Over the winter of 2019 other club members planned a complete exhaust system overhaul including a resonator and muffler to make it more pleasant at race events. I headed helped others cut and fit each piece then I completed all welds on the entire exhaust assembly.

I had a great time welding this because it really pushed my abilities and skill level. The combination of thin-walled tubing, the number of welds, and of course some large gaps made this the most complex part I have fabricated. Below you can see the resonator, flex pipe and the turbo flange (back purged).
We had to test out the sound: the video has before and after exhaust clips of revving the rotary engine. The new quieter exhaust really emphasizes the noise of the turbo and blow-off valve which sound amazing!
